LAFAYETTE, Colo. - USA Rugby Men's Sevens Head Coach Mike Friday has selected the 12 athletes and his seven staff to represent Team USA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The diverse roster includes athletes from across the country, international rugby stars and an NFL Super Bowl Champion. Rugby was last played in the Olympics by the men in 1924, when the USA won gold in the standard 15-a-side version of the game. This will mark the first time Rugby Sevens will be played in the Olympic Games. "It's a huge honor to represent your country at any time in your life, but to be given the responsibility at the Olympic Games - the biggest sporting event on the planet - makes it even more special," said Friday. "The fact that we will be part of Team USA and that as a result we will be exposing the USA sporting public to another team sport they can engage with and enjoy watching, as well as passionately support their country, is immense. "The boys fully appreciate the accountability that comes with that responsibility and are looking forward with confidence to those challenges. While we are not the pre-tournament favorites like Fiji who have to play with that expectation, we are a team who are hugely respected and feared by all other countries as genuine contenders. We know that on any given Sunday we have the power, pace and physicality to match and beat anyone. The boys recognize the magnitude of the task but are confident that we can be medal contenders if we play to our ability. We will represent the people of the USA in a way that they expect and deserve, exhibiting the characteristics that will make them proud." From Men's Club Rep. / RMR Vice-President Erik Geib There are several things to note when looking at the schedule: -The union and the competitive region committee were not able to accommodate all requests for which level each club is to compete (see below); both the union men's club committee (myself, plus the two elected division representatives) and the Frontier Competitive Region (CR) group unanimously approved the attached structure, however; -For those of you with multiple sides, we've constructed special tabs to examine your schedules next to each other. If you see a note that says "can be fixed with timing," that means the union has fixed the issue of multiple sides competing by setting kickoff times (next point). If you see a note that says "imperfect, but has to work," it means just that. RMR did the best it could to not put sides in conflict, but hopes that your depth will assist you those weekends. It's impossible to create perfect harmony for mulitple-side teams, but the union is confident it did the best it could. -The union has set standardized kickoff times for all matches this year. You can see those set times on the 'Referees' tab portion of the schedule document. If you do not like your set time, or cannot accommodate it with your facility, you must get approval from the union to change the time at least 30 days before the match is played. Most of the times are set around the clubs competing with multiple sides, and schedule change requests affect those clubs accordingly -RMR attempted to follow date requests as best as possible; if you didn't put in requests, RMR did not accommodate them -As always, double-check for Sunday matches; if you see a match in a column with a date and the (II) indication, it means you're playing a late afternoon match. Provo requested that both of its 'away weekends' feature both matches on Saturday. -Division 2 and Division 3 will both be double round-robin (home and away) with no RMR playoffs prior to the Frontier playoffs; each team will play 10 matches -Division 4 will be single round-robin and all teams will play 8 matches; the top four will advance to the RMR Division 4 Playoffs; the bottom five may choose to compete for the Division 4 plate in 10s competition -The Frontier Playoffs (Division 2 / Division 3) could be the weekend of April 29 or May 6, which is why both weekends are marked on all schedules; The National Playoffs are the weekends of May 20 and June 3 -With a cleaner league structure this year, the weekend of the High Desert Rugby Tournament was left open in addition to the traditional Aspen date, major rugby events, and all holidays The following promotion/relegation items are included: -Colorado Springs' request to self-relegate to Division 3 was approved; it is felt the Springs are best set to reorganize in Division 3, and build their club with D3 and D4 teams -CSOB Stags' request to compete in Division 3 was denied; the Stags must complete an entire year under RMR before being eligible to compete in D3, and teams of a similar competition level are also going to be in Division 4 -Colorado Rush's request to be promoted to Division 3 was denied; it was felt that the Rush would be more competitive in a strengthened D4 than competing against the D3 league as it is to exist -Littleton failed to play all of its matches in Division 3 in 2015-2016 and is denied the opportunity to compete in Division 3 in 2016-2017; the club had a strong Spring and is expected to be competitive in Division 4 -The Marauders were relegated to Division 4 after finishing last among non-forfeiting teams in Division 3 in 2015-2016; their PD was -34.66 against remaining D3 teams, and the D3 league will be stronger with Colorado Springs coming down New items to note: -The Laramie Lumberjacks are the union's newest men's club and will compete in Division 4 this year while playing their first entire year of competition -The Division 4 competition is much more formalized, and no B/C sides that didn't request entry have been entered -The fines for failure to appear for a non-weather-canceled match will increase this year (TBD) -As noted at the AGM, teams who are not using scoreboards - as union rules require - will not only pay the fines this year, but will also be responsible for all reported failure to use a scoreboard last season. For some clubs, that could be a fine of up to $1050 after your first match ($150/match last year, plus $150/match for this year's first match). Please get in compliance with the scoreboard initiative. You should be able to build one from Home Depot fairly cheaply, and it raises the standard of each match for participants and spectators. In general, the consensus in building the leagues for next year, and the accompanying schedule(s), was to create competitive competitions for all. It doesn't do anyone any favors if their matches aren't competitive. RMR understands that some teams may not like the division that they have been placed in, but all things are solved through competition, and teams may be promoted/relegated next year based on this year's results. If you have comments on the schedule, you must present them prior to Wednesday at 6:00 PM Mountain Time. No changes to theschedule will be made after the Thursday confirmation email. Schedules may be found on the RMR website, located here:
Men's Division 2 Men's Division 3 Men's Division 4 Article by Erik Geib, Men's Club Representative With three weekends to play before the 2016 Frontier Conference Championships, the playoff picture for the Men's Division 2 and Men's Division 3 competitions is coming into focus.
MEN'S DIVISION 2 Following a 44-6 victory over the Denver Harlequins in Grand Junction, the Provo Steelers remain atop the standings in Men's D2 with 46 league points (PTS). Provo can clinch a spot in the playoffs with a single league point (PTS) in its final match versus Glendale on April 23. If Provo can secure 5 league points (PTS) in that match, it can assure itself the #1 seed in the playoffs and a trophy for being regular season champions. Also in Grand Junction, the Glendale Raptors won a critical match over Park City Haggis, 32-29. The win puts the Raptors back into the thick of things, but it has two huge matches remaining - both against playoff contenders. If Glendale can win out, and deny Boulder a bonus point in doing so, it controls its own destiny. The loss to Glendale puts Park City Haggis in a difficult position, but not an impossible one. The defending RMR D2 champions can still secure a playoff berth with a win over the Denver Harlequins and the right results in other matches. Park City's best-case scenario is a late-season collapse for Boulder and a Provo victory over Glendale. However, should Boulder and Park City finish tied - and the same number of wins - Park City also holds the tiebreaker over Boulder. For Boulder, making the playoffs is a simpler equation: win out, and control its own destiny. Boulder doesn't need anyone else to lose as long as it keeps winning, and it still has a good shot at a playoff berth even if it stumbles once. Though Boulder cruised to a big victory over Colorado Springs last weekend (60-17), it has a huge match against the Raptors this coming weekend at Infinity Park South. A win there will virtually cripple the Raptors, and put Boulder only 5-6 points (PTS) away from the playoffs with two games to go. After this weekend, Boulder has an April 23 match with the Barbarians and a make-up match with the fifth-place Harlequins to play. Despite sitting at 4-6 overall, the Denver Harlequins could play a major role as spoiler, with two matches to play against contenders. The Harlequins' record doesn't reflect their talent, and the Quins only have a -7 overall points differential (PD) for the year despite some struggles to close out wins. Provo Steelers: 11 GP, 46 PTS | 4.18 PTS/GM | MAX: 51 PTS Boulder Rugby: 9 GP, 35 PTS | 3.89 PTS/GM | MAX: 50 PTS Glendale Raptors D2: 10 GP, 36 PTS | 3.60 PTS/GM | MAX: 46 PTS Park City Haggis: 11 GP, 39 PTS | 3.55 PTS/GM | MAX: 44 PTS Important games remaining (Men's D2): April 16 - Glendale Raptors D2 vs. Boulder Rugby April 23 - Provo Steelers vs. Glendale Raptors D2 April 23 - Park City Haggis vs. Denver Harlequins April 23 - Boulder Rugby vs. Denver Barbarians April 30* - Boulder Rugby vs. Denver Harlequins *April 30 is the assumed make-up date. The match may take place any time between now and May 1, however. MEN'S DIVISION 3 With Queen City's 85-12 victory over the Northside Marauders, City clinches a spot in the RMR Men's Division 3 Championship against their crosstown rivals, the Denver Highlanders. The Highlanders have already clinched the top seed and will host on either April 30 or May 1. Both clubs still have matches to play against Littleton, but those matches will technically give each team 5 points according to league rules. Littleton's inability to field a team properly in the Fall means that though it can win on paper, and put points towards a Centennial Cup championship, it can't technically take points (PTS) away from either Queen City or the Highlanders in their final matches. The Glendale Raptors' third squad, despite a late run, is technically eliminated. The Raptors lost their opportunity over two consecutive weekends, losing first to the Highlanders 27-5 on March 19, and then Queen City 63-24 the following weekend (March 26). Wednesday, March 11

With the win and SFGG’s draw with Santa Monica the Raptors now have the top of the table to themselves with four wins and one loss. The Barbarians move to 2-3 on the season and will look for a win next week to set themselves back at .500.
Despite the eventual result Denver were the first on the board as Ata Malifa, who has been playing well the last few weeks, scored to give Denver a 7-0 lead only three minutes in after Max De Achaval hit the conversion. However, that would be all Denver would get until the second half as the Raptors blew open the match thanks to two tries from Preston Bryant, a try from Brett Willis, as well as two conversions and a penalty from Dan Fleming. At the half Glendale led 22-7. Fleming would add to the lead only a couple of minutes into the second half with a penalty before Denver earned an penalty try to inch back into the match. With De Achaval’s conversion the Barbarians found themselves trailing only 25-14 with plenty of time to play. Bryant and Barbarians center Taylor Howard would then trade tries ten minutes a part to push the score to 30-21 in favor of Glendale with less than ten minutes remaining. Glendale then sealed the match for good when Brodie Orth, who attended Eagles camp last week, scored the final try of the match just five minutes from time. Once again Glendale showed why they were the top regular season team last year. The team also benefited from having their large contingent back from Eagles camp. For the Barbarians it was another tough loss to a rival and puts a big dent in any plans of controlling their own playoff destiny the rest of the season. |
